Although my field course in Costa Rica runs in January, there is a long period of preparations before we board the flight on January 2. First, I got the approval to run the program, then worked with the Office of Study Abroad to plan the itinerary and select field sites for the research. After finalizing documents, we advertised the program online and via the undergraduate newsletter. I also spent an afternoon in the OSA Fair in the student union. Students have many questions before selecting a program from the rich menu we offer; I got questions in personal visits, and via emails and phone calls. Finally, recruits completed the online applications. It is exciting selecting the perfect team for travel and fieldwork as each member brings their unique perspectives, interests and skills to make a fun and successful expedition. Finally, today, we accepted nine students for the upcoming program. I look forward to meeting them all, individually and as groups, as we get to know each other and prepare for this life-changing adventure.
